Imagine an underground river arrested in its rush to the sea, its currents stilled, its waves frozen in place. Winding through the petrified churnings and cascades are dark arteries of air where men can travel, hidden from the sky. In the world of my novel, the stone river can take the traveler to unexpected places, or show him odd things. Maybe a bit like this blog.

Trying to write is very much like trying to put a Chinese puzzle together. We have a pattern in mind which we wish to work out in words, but the words will not fit the spaces, or if they do, they will not match the design. -- Helen Keller
As a child, I lived in a world of make-believe. As an adult, I still do. But instead of Barbie dolls and Breyer horses and little plastic dinosaurs, I now play with words and figments of my imagination. My fantasy novel, The Knife-Giver, is nearing completion. I have also published a novelette, "Dragon's Eye" (Lords of Swords, anthology ed. by Daniel Blackston, Pitch-Black Books, 2004), which was listed on the 2005 Nebula preliminary ballot, and awarded an Honorable Mention in The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror 2006, ed. by Ellen Datlow, Kelly Link, and Gavin Grant.
